- The software for my voice modem allows for selection from 4 bit, 8 bit
- or 16 bit samples. I assume that because of the fact that a 16 bit
- sample is going to generate more serial traffic than the average
- serial port can handle the modem must also use a DMA channel similar
- to a sound card.
-
- Whatever the method, the sound quality is very good. As far as
- reliability goes, I've only had to reset the modem once in the past
- three months and that was after a brownout combined with a surge that
- actually physically damaged other computers in my office building.
-
- I'm using a Boca14.4 Voice/Fax/Modem to handle voice mail calls. It
- comes with its own software (FaxWorks).
-
- Before the Boca I had a Promethius (big mistake). That piece only
- lasted about 2 months before it decided to burn out. The speaker jack
- on it never did work properly; always emmitted a loud hum.
