  28. The software for my voice modem allows for selection from 4 bit, 8 bit
  29. or 16 bit samples.  I assume that because of the fact that a 16 bit
  30. sample is going to generate more serial traffic than the average
  31. serial port can handle the modem must also use a DMA channel similar
  32. to a sound card.

  34. Whatever the method, the sound quality is very good.  As far as
  35. reliability goes, I've only had to reset the modem once in the past
  36. three months and that was after a brownout combined with a surge that
  37. actually physically damaged other computers in my office building.

  39. I'm using a Boca14.4 Voice/Fax/Modem to handle voice mail calls.  It
  40. comes with its own software (FaxWorks).

  42. Before the Boca I had a Promethius (big mistake).  That piece only
  43. lasted about 2 months before it decided to burn out.  The speaker jack
  44. on it never did work properly; always emmitted a loud hum.
